FINAL

Perpignan PERPIGNAN 6-16 ASM CLERMONT AUVERGNE ASM Clermont Auvergne
STADE DE FRANCE – Saturday 29th May 2010
Attendance: 95,000

CLERMONT Auvergne were finally crowned French champions at the 11th time of asking after they eked out a 16-6 win over defending title-holders Perpignan in the Stade de France to claim the highly-prized Bouclier de Brennus.

Top 14 Final Winners Perpignan

Labelled French rugby’s biggest chokers, Clermont capitalised on a poor day at the office for Perpignan’s fly-half Jerome Porical, who missed four out of six shots at goal while Clermont scrum-half Morgan Parra was calmness personified from start to finish.

Parra landed the killer blow 19 minutes from the end, a minute after Porical had missed his fourth shot at goal, to take Clermont ten points clear in a disjointed second half from which battling Perpignan deserved so much more.

Tension was high right from the off, which resulted in a dust-up between the two packs and a typically blunt dressing down from referee Christophe Berdos.

Both sides missed penalties in the opening five minutes before Parra finally scored the first points of the game in the tenth minute.

Five minutes later, Clermont scored the opening and only try, wing Napolioni Nalaga forcing his way over after a quick line-out and a clever break by fly-half Brock James, whose pass set Nalaga up to dive between the legs of Nicolas Durand, playing his last game for the Catalans.

Parra converted that and then landed his second penalty after Porical had made it 10-6 with two of his own.

Porical missed his second of the night just before half-time in a match in which had seen Clermont enjoy 65 per cent possession thus far without translating enough of it into points or clear scoring chances.

The second half was a much more even affair as Perpignan dug out a hefty kitchen sink to throw at the Clermont defence but, again, Porical let his side down when he missed a tough kick just after the break and a real sitter on the hour mark.

When Parra slotted his third kick to take his side two scores ahead, Perpignan heads dropped visibly. And when full-back Anthony Floch landed a drop-goal to extend the lead to 13 points, Clermont’s ten previous losing visits to the Top 14 final were dispatched to history.
